Downtown Block Party

Are you looking for information about the Downtown Block Party? You came to the right place!

Here, you will find information on everything related to our event celebrating the 2017 Amgen Tour of California coming through Downtown SLO as well our amazing group of Downtowners. On May 16th Higuera Street will transform from a busy five lane street into a public place where you can hear live music, enjoy local craft beer or cider, play in a competitive cornhole tournament and bring your kids down for a fun game of Red Light, Green Light. On their bikes!

With local support from BarrelHouse Brewery and Jean Marie Cidery we will have adult beverages on tap to quench your thirst. For those of us with big appetites and the folks just looking for nibbles, we encourage you to visit one of our dozens of Downtown SLO eateries to grab take out and join us in our seating section on Chorro Street or to partake in some fun yard games like giant Jenga, Connect Four and even a game of trash can drink pong. More details on all of our events are to be determined but rest assured, this is a Block Party you won’t want to miss.

The cornhole tournament will be a true throw down of Downtown SLO proportions. With a $20 buy in you and your partner will be entered into the official tournament bracket for a chance at a cash purse and your first drink. Challenge other teams to sign up and get this tournament rolling! Teams interested in signing up can E-Mail our staff here, payment will be accepted at the event or in advance. We will be playing with American Cornhole Association’s official rules as our guide, to see more jump over to their website and get a primer on what to expect for gameplay. If you are curious about some cornhole bag throwing strategy, check out this video to find your style.

Closures for the event will consist of the following map and shall resemble those of a typical Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market. If you have any questions please do feel free to reach out to our team and we will be glad to provide as much assistance as we can.

Did we mention live music? Starting at 2 PM, local favorite DJ Malik will be starting to spin some tunes at the corner of Higuera and Garden Streets and our main stage event will be televising the race LIVE on 5 large screens complete with our event hosts, Adam Montiel and Pedro Brown. Adam is a local radio personality from Coast 104.5, where he hosts “Up & Adam in the Morning”, and also appears on Crush 92.5. Pedro is a professional cycling race announcer known throughout the state and cycling circuit. Having been the former voice of USF Dons sports programs and a veteran announcer of such classic bike races as the Merco Classic, the Giro de San Francisco and the Davis 4th of July Criterium, he is sure to provide a great experience to avid cyclists as well as inspire future enthusiasts to follow the sport. Pedro will be on site to guide you through each and every turn of the race and provide some insight into cycling terminology and the strategies that the pros will be using as they come into a full sprint on Higuera Street. This section of the race is a significant portion of the race and as the riders sprint toward the Block Party, a highly coveted green jersey will be won by one athlete right here in the heart of Downtown SLO. Our emcees will be announcing the remainder of the race through its dramatic finish in Morro Bay so be sure to stick around and watch the live footage as we celebrate this exciting Stage. The excitement won’t end with the finish of the race though! At approximately 4PM, longtime favorite central coast band Zongo All-Stars will take the stage with their Afro-Caribbean beats to keep the party going. We will be turning Higuera Street into a fun, game filled Block Party that will be fun for all ages. The excitement will continue until 6PM!
