Downtown News

  • Downtown Perspective

dominic_higueraIn San Luis Obispo, there is a handful of people that have dedicated much of their lives to creating the warm and inviting place that we affectionately call Downtown. Last month I had an opportunity to meet with one individual that undoubtedly played a big role in shaping the present state of our community. Deborah Cash spent nearly 20 years at the helm of the Downtown Association and as my predecessor she navigated some difficult times and exciting times but always stayed on course to building a better Downtown. Needless to say, I had some questions for Deborah that I hoped would shed some insight into what her career looked like, through her eyes.

  • Making Change Count Through Directed Giving

On Tuesday, May 10th, San Luis Obispo Downtown Association along with the City of San Luis Obispo and the United Way of San Luis Obispo County presented Friends of Prado with a $2800 check from funds collected through the Directed Giving Campaign “Make Change Count Help for the Homeless” donation meters.

There are seven Directed Giving meters (donation stations) located throughout Downtown as way for the community to give directly to programs that provide homeless services. The program is also educational, encouraging citizens to give directly for social service efforts and curb instances of panhandling.

The Directed Giving Campaign began as a pilot program in 2014 and to-date has raised over $11,000 through meter sponsorships, private donations and direct donations made at the various donation station sites. Funds raised have been donated to the Friends of Prado, an organization created to helping the homeless in SLO County since 1997. Each day 90-100 homeless men, women and children come to the Prado Day Center for essential day-to-day services, employment assistance, social services and enriching activities for the children.

A special thanks goes out to the many community members, businesses and community organizations for their donation meter sponsorships, support of the Directed Giving pilot program to Make Change Count.  Click here for more information about the campaign.

  • Downtown Business Spotlight – Summers/Murphy & Partners, Inc.

Jim_Burrows“I always missed working Downtown,” says Jim Burrows.  Jim is a landscape architect who works at 979 Osos Street, a handsome brick building built in the 1890s.  He says working Downtown was important when choosing an office for himself.  He used to work near Tank Farm Road, but missed the vibrant enthusiasm of the Downtown community.

Now, working Downtown, Jim says he is much happier.  Every day Jim walks to work, makes his way up the building’s light blue carpet staircase to his cozy corner office.  Natural light shines in onto the rough red brick walls that line Jim’s office.  Although Jim works alone here in San Luis Obispo, he is part of a larger team of 30 landscape architects that make up Summers/Murphy & Partners.  Read More
