Meet Daniel Glidden and David Santiago, co-owners of Dune, a newly opened furniture showroom at Higuera and Nipomo streets in the west end of Downtown. The showroom, which Daniel describes as “mid-century modern design with a Central Coast vibe”, opened its doors in November. The 1,000 square foot showroom is artfully arranged with unique furniture and accessories at an accessible price point. A rug line they carry is beautifully and innocuously made from recycled denim and plastic; eco- savvy bamboo tables out of Kent, Washington use a 3-story concrete block to compress bamboo into a flat surface that is 20% harder than oak. Top-grain leather sectionals and sofas are offered for surprisingly affordable prices, and an upholstery line is regionally sourced, from Los Angeles. There’s also a curated smattering of ceramics, candles, and accessories from the United States and Canada. Assembled together, the showroom is sleek but warmer and more approachable than more traditional mid-century inspired looks. This was intentional on behalf of Daniel and David, partners who have been together for over a decade and who also had a dream of opening their own business together. After a challenge from a high school friend to do just that, Glidden and Santiago now find themselves in Downtown San Luis. “We couldn’t be happier to be here”, affirms David, who also had the name Dune in his back pocket for two decades as a potential restaurant. Though now the duo has the satisfaction of seeing the moniker on their storefront, that hasn’t stopped them from dreaming big: “We want more” says Daniel, adding that they want a North County and a South County presence in the future. For now, their goal is to “make the world a little bit more beautiful.”
