A new addition to the Creamery—tucked away behind Ciopinot—sits La Esquina, a fine dining, classic, Mexican restaurant. After opening Ciopinot Seafood Grille back in 2009, Leonard Cohen saw a need for high-quality Mexican food in San Luis Obispo, which led him to open La Esquina earlier this fall. “There was a niche, so I decided that I was going to [fill it, and] do a Mexican Restaurant,” Cohen said. The 80-seat restaurant has an authentic Mexican feel, complete with décor straight from Guadalajara, including glassware blown in Mexico, pottery, and custom made art and chandeliers. Cohen’s vision for La Esquina was to create a high quality Mexican restaurant, geared more towards working professionals and less towards college students.
“La Esquina has clean, high quality products where we cook things to order,” Cohen said. “We have friendly service, nice wines, and great margaritas.” La Esquina’s ingredients are locally sourced: beef aged for three months, fresh tortillas from Santa Maria, and produce from the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market. The menu gets new additions each week, but some favorites, like the baked oysters—made with chorizo, chipotle, tequila, and a mild white sauce—have been here since the beginning.
“The food we serve here is phenomenal,” Cohen said. “Everything we do here is better than anything anyone is doing close to us.” To find out for yourself, visit La Esquina at 1049 Nipomo Street for dinner from 5 PM until 9 PM, daily.
