30th Annual Beautification Awards

Downtown SLO awarded honors to 28 Downtown businesses at its 30th Annual Beautification Awards Ceremony on April 3. Each year since 1990, these awards are given to those businesses that made physical or aesthetic improvements towards keeping Downtown beautiful.

Downtown SLO’s Cultural Arts Committee oversaw the process from selecting the candidates to presenting the awards in categories including New Construction, Tenant Improvements, Merchandising, Maintenance, and several special awards. Beautification Awards Committee Chair Marshall Ochylski emceed the ceremony and presented a slide show while announcing the winners, along with help from Mayor Heidi Harmon who handed out the Mayor’s Award.

Beautification Award Committee members Landy Fike, Ryan Brockett, Bruce Fraser, James Papp, , Stephen Patrick, Karen Kile, Bettina Swigger, Rachel Maiorino and Brent Vanderhoof assisted Ochylski in jurying the candidates and categorizing the awards. Top honors include the prestigious Mayor’s Award, this year given to the Garden Street Redevelopment project, the Chairperson’s Award given to the Creamery Marketplace, and the CEO’s Award given to The Junk Girls.

The awards ceremony took place at the Downtown SLO Office and was preceded by a social hour featuring donated food and beverage from Chamisal Vineyards, Libertine Brewing Company, and award winners McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream, Le Petit Paris, Sequoia Sandwich Company, and Woodstock’s Pizza. Winners were presented with certificates, and the top awards were presented with one-of-a-kind trophy awards designed by architecture students at Cal Poly, under the direction of Professor Ryan Brockett.

Custom awards were created using a poplar wood base with a top detail of acrylic paint swirled into rockite, creating a pattern unique to each award. The inscription “Downtown San Luis Obispo Beautification Award 2019” was laser etched into the front. Awards were created by the Cal Poly Alpha Rho Chi (APX) Daedalus Chapter; a national co-ed social and professional fraternity for students of architecture and the allied arts. Students involved were Samantha Ihle, Guang Li, and Cristina Tognotti.
