16 Sep 2019 Concerts in the Plaza Wrap Up
Friday nights in Downtown San Luis Obispo mean one thing – cool music, good libations, and great company in a casual atmosphere. Our 24th annual season of Concerts in the Plaza wrapped up on September, and we say goodbye to summer after 14 amazing weeks of free live music in Mission Plaza. A round of applause to all who contributed to this season’s success!
There’s so much that goes in to this beloved tradition. The complex logistics of event setup are completely visible to the public because there’s no backstage when your concert hall is the town square. Starting on Friday mornings, people jockey their lawn chairs, vying to get the best position and reserve spots next to their friends. But by 6 pm when the band is in full swing and the plaza is full of people dancing, you’re friends with everyone. As the evening progresses, you can practically feel the community buzzing around you.
Thanks go to our incredible events staff for keeping the logistics smooth and operations copacetic. Concerts in the plaza is a true community social hour, where people gather, embracing and reconnecting with one another. Deals are made, people fall in love, and families grow. Over by the amphitheater children squeal and roll down the grassy hills, clutching balloon animals, legs akimbo. Thanks to all of our corporate sponsors, our volunteers, the bike valet, and the amazing musicians who shared their talents with us.
At Downtown SLO, the nonprofit organization that produces these fun events for the public, we are committed to bringing people together. And concerts in the Plaza has fulfilled that goal for 24 years. However, it can be hard to quantify the feeling that comes from being surrounded by friends, hearing great music, sipping on local beer, wine, cider, or kombucha. How do you measure the embrace of a new or longlost friend?
Well, here are some numbers to quantify the value of the program beyond the warm fuzzies that pumped out of the plaza all summer long. See you next year for the 25th anniversary of Concerts in the Plaza!
