The 2021 May Flower Initiative

Launched during the first COVID shutdown in May 2020, The May Flower Initiative aims to bring hope to the community through art. In its second year, in 2021, the May Flower Initiative will bloom downtown. Downtown SLO was one of ten communities nationwide to receive a grant from Main Street America through the Main Street Resiliency Grant Program, made possible by the Grills Fund for Main Street Revitalization.

Window Blossoms & May Flower Poles

Walk around downtown and enjoy the blossoming flowers going up on 87 artist-decorated windows by 75 artists, including two city properties decorated by Jenny Chang, Hannah Stephens, and Linnaea Marks. Also, 40 flower-wrapped light poles decorated by the Downtown SLO Clean & Safe Ambassadors.

Plaza Pop-Up in partnership with the City of SLO

Downtown SLO is proud to partner with the City of SLO for the month of May in the Plaza Pop-Up program. The Plaza Pop-Up activates the historic Mission Plaza with installations and decorations to activate the community and celebrate the arts.

Take a selfie in the interactive floral picture frame selfie station pod created by Karson Butler Events, featuring butterflies from the Cal Poly Rose Float Team.

Visit Mission Plaza each weekend in May and be amazed by the student-built ornamental horticulture installation "Springs Wings" by Cal Poly Rose Float Team, featuring a flower pot with a butterfly and caterpillar and a mechanical bee hanging from the pergola, made from welded steel and decorated with dried florals, produce, and natural elements.

Additional activations include:

  • An 8’ x 8’ map of all 87 window blooms
  • An 8' lighted California Poppy
  • Chalk Art Mural (to be completed), “The Progression of Motherhood,” by Katy McGrath of Badger Branding, perfect for Mother’s Day celebrations on May 9
  • Whimsical Chalk Art by the Trust Automation Children’s Center Chalk Art Crew
  • Tables and chairs available for dining 11 am - 8 pm daily

Scavenger Hunt: Find and Protect the Monarchs

Families can pick up a card with clues for the scavenger hunt at Mission Plaza, which will lead to five different locations throughout Downtown. Children will use their way-finding skills to follow the butterflies around downtown and learn about how monarchs navigate in the wild. Upon completion of the scavenger hunt, children will receive a packet of milkweed seeds to plant in their garden. Brought to you in partnership with the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum.
