Women-Owned Businesses in Downtown San Luis Obispo 2026

Last updated: March 26, 2026

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we're highlighting a few of the amazing women-owned businesses in our downtown!

Battle Axe

Mother-daughter duo Shelley and Chloe Stuckey began Battle Axe in 2021! While some axe-throwing places market themselves with traditional masculine iconography and typically offer alcoholic beverages, Shelley and Chloe wanted to create a unique, sober-friendly space that felt approachable to all people, regardless of gender. This is represented in their logo, which features two superhero-inspired women of color brandishing axes. This is a great space for a first date, a staff outing, or a family night!

Black Sheep Bar & Grill

Celebrating its 21st anniversary this year, Black Sheep Bar & Grill has been an iconic downtown staple. Myriam Olaizola began the restaurant and bar with a desire to serve good food and drink, provide consistent service, and create a community-centered space that welcomes the outsider (or “black sheep”) in all of us. Try their award-winning mac and cheese and enjoy wine, beer, and cocktails!

Hola SLO

Wildflower Women

Amber Lease began Wildflower Women in 2009, with a vision of offering specialty brands and bringing more high-quality materials like denim, knits, and cashmere to the Central Coast. She aims to find colors, textures, fabrics, and styles that celebrate women in every aspect of their lives, from work to play! Shop curated apparel that suits your lifestyle and visit her children-centered sister store, Sandbox Kids, for clothing, plushies, and more!

The Healthy Crave

The Healthy Crave is proudly owned and operated by mother-daughter duo Norma Acosta and Anhel Somilleda, who bring culture and nutrition to everything they create. Opening in 2021, the duo built their business on a passion for serving healthy treats while creating a welcoming space where everyone can feel at home. Featuring a diverse menu with gluten-free and plant-based proteins/milks available, you can enjoy smoothies, refreshing energy drinks, acai bowls, protein waffles, and more!

HumanKind Fair Trade

Founded by local elementary school teacher Elizabeth Aebischer in 2004, HumanKind is a non-profit fair trade organization that offers unique retail items handcrafted by artisans all over the world! Store manager LynAnne Wilton has played a key role in the development of the business as it has expanded and evolved over the last decade-plus. Many of the organizations they partner with employ women in locations where economic opportunities can be scarce. Shop unique trinkets, apparel, kitchen wares, and home goods that provide living wages to talented artisans across the globe and support economic independence and sustainability in their communities.

Idlewild Floral

In 2020, Carla Wingett pivoted her fresh flower business to the dried, evergreen arrangements that we now associate with Idlewild Floral! This shift reflects her inspiration to create timeless and sustainable beauty. Each arrangement is assembled in-house by an incredible team of women, from petite bouquets to large-scale event arrangements. Shop their retail space for gifts, apparel, wedding offerings, and more!

Junk Girls

After careers in the corporate world, owners Jenny Kompolt and Melissa James turned their love of handcrafted trinkets and passion for art therapy into the space we know as Junk Girls! Operating since 2009, they offer an eclectic retail space that includes vintage one-of-a-kind treasures, in-house creations, specialty art workshops, and more! Visit their website for a list of upcoming classes and stop by to see the magic in person.

Apropos

Mother-daughter team Laura Bjorkland and Natalie Risner began Apropos in 2002 with a desire to empower women through fashion. With an emphasis on small, USA-made brands, they fill their warm retail space with unique, high-quality items, from casual daily-wear to formal attire! A great stop for gifts, shop their jewelry, trinkets, apparel, and more!

Hola SLO

Business owners and friends, Sandra Olea-Courter and Sara McGrath opened their vibrant retail space in downtown this January! Merging their creativity and passion, they bring Hola SLO to life–a boutique featuring Mexican-inspired gifts, jewelry, trinkets, and community workshops! Grab a coffee at their neighbor/sister store, Corazon Cafe, and shop for unique gifts and treasures.
