San Luis Obispo County's Hanukkah celebrations will begin on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo. The menorah will be lit nightly at 5:00 PM throughout the eight-day festival.

On Thursday, December 26, 2024, at 5:00 PM, the community will gather in Mission Plaza for our annual celebration, continuing a decades-long tradition. The event will feature Hanukkah songs, children's activities, and traditional holiday foods.

The menorah used in our downtown celebration holds special significance. Designed in 1990 by Mission San Luis Obispo's Father Nisbet and constructed by Moises Lewis, the Mission's chief of maintenance, it symbolizes resilience and hope. This beacon represents the Jewish community's endurance through challenging times and serves as a light that brings our diverse community together.

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem following the Maccabees' victory. The menorah will be displayed at Mission Plaza throughout the eight days of Hanukkah, serving as a symbol of light, freedom, and cultural heritage.

We invite the entire community to join in these celebrations, embracing the spirit of unity and tradition that defines our county.
