Jenny Kompolt and Melissa James started the JunkGirls on the Central Coast in 2009. What began as a creative dream in a garage evolved into traveling for vintage shows & markets, to their store and gallery in Cambria, and then became their retail destination in the heart of San Luis Obispo.

They bring their own creative journey to their store, where over 70% of what they offer is created by Jenny, Melissa, and their talented team. Jenny’s contribution to the mix is her line of art, lighting, furniture, and creative direction of the overall JunkGirls brand. Melissa is widely known for her popular metal stamping & watercolor art. They are supported by a talented team who work with them to create everything big and small, which makes up their unique space.
Both began their careers in the corporate world, where they gained valuable experience in business, advertising, merchandising, and design. Having met over thirty years ago, the JunkGirls is their fourth business together and was born from Jenny’s art therapy, Melissa’s love of all things handmade, and their desire to give back to the community in lasting and meaningful ways.
Jenny & Melissa are grateful to be in downtown SLO surrounded by so many other unique & special small businesses. They are also grateful for the visible and encouraging work of the Downtown SLO organization, whose support strengthens local businesses. “We are part of a wonderful network of talented business owners and a community who care about everyone’s outcome. We believe that when everyone works together, we all succeed, and we encourage aspiring business owners to reach out, meet your neighbors, and support each other.”
They also believe in knowing what your business’s foundational values and guiding principles are, which will help clarify decisions and signal when it’s time to lean on your team and community. “We understand the importance of lifting one another up, listening closely to clients, customers, and peers, and staying nimble as we grow.” Speaking of growing, in addition to their retail store, they now offer weekly Workshops, as well as customized private events from birthday parties to corporate events in their unique and always changing space.
One of their greatest joys in being in business for so many years is witnessing their community and customers grow alongside them. “We have so many customers who met us before we came to SLO who still visit us, have had the privilege of watching children grow up, families expand, and milestones celebrated through handmade gifts and custom pieces. Knowing that we’ve touched someone or brought joy in some way fills our souls and it’s a big reason we do what we do. We would never be where we are today without all the support and we are so very grateful.”
