You’ve seen it move, you’ve seen it grow, you’ve seen it bloom. Open Air Flowers has been a cherished part of the San Luis Obispo Community for over 40 years, standing alongside locals through life’s most meaningful moments. Today, Open Air Flowers continues to brighten our community from its corner on Osos and Monterey Street in Downtown SLO.

Open Air Flowers was founded in 1982 by Vance and Leslie Weber as a humble farm-stand-style business, selling flowers with the simple dream of bringing beauty to the community. Over the years, that dream flourished. The original stand grew into multiple locations, including a shop in Laguna Plaza and a small flower pop-up near what is now the Firestone patio downtown. The shop eventually found its current home on Osos Street, where it now draws in both locals and tourists alike with its vibrant blooms, bold colors, and eye-catching arrangements. What began as a small farm stand in the ’80s has fully blossomed into a full-service flower shop, continuing its legacy today under the guidance and leadership of new owner Lisa Dietz.

Lisa grew up in Germany, learning the art of floristry from her mother, though she didn’t imagine it would one day become her full-time calling. After moving to the United States, she found herself drawn back to what she knew best and began working for the Webers in 2016. While she did not grow up in San Luis Obispo, under Vance and Leslie’s guidance, she quickly learned the deep roots Open Air Flowers had planted within the community.

When the Webers decided to retire in 2023, it was essential that Open Air Flowers was passed to someone they trusted to carry forward the shop’s traditions and values. Lisa and her husband, Gamal, purchased the shop, and together with their three kids, they run the store like an extension of their family. Today, much of the staff remains the same team that worked under Vance and Leslie, a testament to the family-like culture that welcomed her from the beginning. That sense of continuity and care is what makes Open Air Flowers so special. Neither the shop nor Lisa would be where they are today without the unwavering support of the Open Air Flowers family.

Flowers have a profound impact on people, and through that impact, the team has learned the true importance of community. As a florist, you are invited into both the happiest and hardest moments of someone’s life. You help celebrate joy, mark milestones, and, at times, offer comfort during grief, working to bring light when it’s needed most. This is a value Open Air Flowers holds close to its heart. The shop is deeply invested not only in its work, but in the people it serves. For Lisa, that sense of connection is the most meaningful part of all. Hearing customers stop in just to say, “I remember when…” or “This place always makes me smile” reminds her that their work leaves a lasting impression.

When asked to offer advice, Lisa emphasizes the importance of keeping an open mind and remembering that running a business is a marathon, not a sprint. Staying true to your roots while creating a welcoming, comfortable experience is key to building lasting relationships with customers. She believes San Luis Obispo provides a strong foundation for small businesses and that by getting to know one another and supporting locals, the community will naturally support you in return. She highlights the importance of growth and evolution without straying from your core values. Let the community see who you are, stand by them, and they will stand by you.

Rooted in decades of care, creativity, and connection, the shop continues to bloom as a living piece of San Luis Obispo’s story. Under Lisa’s leadership, with a dedicated family-like team behind her, Open Air Flowers carries its legacy forward, proving that when you lead with authenticity and love for your community, you can create an impact that lasts.
